Walden West ~ June & July

July 30, 2022July 31, 2022 ~ shoreacres ~ 79 Comments

Walden West ~ A hidden vernal pool Thanks to the unexpected loss of transportation I’ve written of elsewhere, my June visit to the spot I call Walden West was significantly delayed. Arriving nearly at the month’s end, I found oppressive heat, swarming mosquitos, biting flies, and a dearth of blooms: a combination that quickly enough … Continue reading Walden West ~ June & July

The first Turk’s Cap bloom of the season When I visited Walden West on February 1, only a few Turk’s Cap leaves had managed to sprout. At the time, I predicted their vibrant flowers would begin appearing at the pond edges in a few weeks, and it seems my prediction was right. On May 2, … Continue reading Walden West ~ May 2

By the first week of April, much of Texas was abloom with vibrantly colored bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and coreopsis, but in the deeply shaded woods surrounding Walden West, no dramatic sweeps of color had emerged. There, more subtle changes were marking the turn of the season. For the first time since January, the sound of … Continue reading Walden West ~ April 2

Walden West ~ March 5

March 14, 2022March 14, 2022 ~ shoreacres ~ 65 Comments

When I arrived at Walden West for a third visit on Saturday, March 5, a number of changes greeted me. Any remaining autumn color had disappeared, and an occasional bird could be heard for the first time. Most obviously, the water level in the pond had risen substantially: so much so that it covered nearly … Continue reading Walden West ~ March 5

Walden West ~ February 1

February 8, 2022 ~ shoreacres ~ 65 Comments

Since the first day of February fell on a Tuesday, I made my second visit to the spot I’ve come to call ‘Walden West’ on January 30 and 31. Tucked between freezes, the days were sunny and mild, with sunlight emphasizing the green of emerging grasses; although the water had receded somewhat, enough remained to … Continue reading Walden West ~ February 1

Mark Twain Defines “Lagniappe”

"We picked up one excellent word--a word worth traveling to New Orleans to get; a nice limber, expressive, handy word--'lagniappe.'

We discovered it at the head of a column of odds and ends in the Picayune, the first day; heard twenty people use it the second; inquired what it meant the third; adopted it and got facility in swinging it the fourth. It is the equivalent of the thirteenth roll in a 'baker's dozen.' It is something thrown in, gratis, for good measure."

(From "Life on the Mississippi")

Why Pair “Lagniappe” With “The Task at Hand”?

I love to write, and "The Task at Hand" always will be my primary site: my place for essays, stories, and poetry.

On the other hand, photography has opened new worlds to me. Now and then, I take special delight in a photo, and have wanted a place to post those I enjoy.

This is that place. You're welcome to consider it lagniappe -- a little something extra -- and I hope you'll find an occasional delight here, as well.
